Northwest made history last week, becoming the first Texan team to win eight games at the Class 5A level. With a victory in their first-round playoff game they can become the first team in school history to reach nine wins.
Northwest (8-2) takes on Arlington Lamar (5-5) in a Class 5A Division II bi-district playoff game Thursday at Cowboy Stadium in Arlington. Kickoff is slated for 9 p.m.“I’ve been in the playoffs before, and it’s always good to go in with momentum,” Northwest coach Bill Patterson said. “Our kids played great all year and played well against a good Keller Central team.”
This is the sixth time the Texans have reached the postseason, their first since 2010. They are still searching for their first playoff victory.
Northwest will try to get that first postseason win at Cowboy Stadium, a place they have never played.
“This is as exciting as it gets,” Patterson said. “Not only for us, but for the bands and cheerleaders too. It’s exciting for everybody involved.”
Arlington Lamar is coming off two straight wins against Weatherford and Paschal.
“They are going to throw the football,” Patterson said. “They have a good quarterback that is going to be back, and they have good speed at running back. Their defense will give up some points, but they are very athletic.”
The Vikings gave up 33 points per game in district.
Patterson knows if his team can continue to play as efficient as they have all-season, then Thursday should be a good match up.
“We just need to continue to not turn the ball over, limit our penalties and score some points,” Patterson said. “Defensively we need to keep them from offensive explosions.”
