First win eludes Panthers

By Messenger Staff | Published Saturday, October 27, 2012

The Paradise Panthers are still in search of their first win of the season after a 44-18 setback Friday at the hands of Callisburg.

The Wildcats came out strong and never looked back, jumping out to a 35-0 lead half-way through the second quarter before Paradise was able to break up the shutout when Tanner Valentine found Callahan Storey on a 7-yard pass for a touchdown. The kick failed, and the Panthers trailed 35-6 at the half.

Callisburg’s first half scores came on runs by Dakota Tinney (10 yards), Clay McKenzie (5 yards) and Jacob Barton (1 yard) and passes from Kyle Rochelle to McKenzie (38 yards) and Rheyce Childress to Dusty Taylor (25 yards). McKenzie was successful on all his point-after kicks.

Paradise’s Taylor Edwards had an 8-yard touchdown run with 4:06 left in the third quarter and a 2-yard touchdown run with 7:07 remaining in the fourth quarter. But Callisburg added a safety and a 30-yard scoring run by Childress in the fourth quarter to cruise to the victory.

The Panthers had 326 total yards of offense after managing only 162 total yards last week. Jarrett Roper rushed for a game-high 167 yards on 18 carries. Valentine was 4 for 11 passing for 27 yards and two interceptions. Jarrett Holt caught two passes for 18 yards.

The loss drops Paradise to 0-8 for the season. They’ll host cross-county rival Boyd next week.
