Sophomore Brandon Rivera’s header in the 79th minute knotted the game and allowed the Decatur Eagles to score a tie in the District 9-4A opener Friday.
The Eagles, who trailed by two goals in the first half, escaped with a 2-2 outcome against Wichita Falls Hirschi.
“We talked all week about effort and playing 80 minutes,” said Decatur coach Nick Stokes. “I didn’t realize it would actually take 79:58 to even the score.
“They shocked us early with two goals in eight minutes, but the guys kept battling. In a physical game, we came through to earn the point for a tie.”
Hirschi led 2-0 at halftime. Daniel Gamino found the back of the net off an assist from Juan Alvarez 10 minutes into the second half.
Rivera’s late-game header was set up by a pass from Harry Boatman.
Decatur keeper Wade Laughlin made 13 saves and allowed two goals. One goal came after a handball call.
