The Chico Dragons want to make amends after what happened to them during the district season last year. Chico suffered an 0-5 district run after beginning the 2011 campaign 4-1.
If the Dragons want to make noise in District 7-A Division I this year, it will begin with the guys up front. Chico has one senior, Chris Young, anchoring the offensive line, and head coach Stephen Carter will start two freshmen, a sophomore and a junior alongside him.
“We’ve got a lot of young kids that are going to have to step up and get it done,” Carter said. “We had some kids that surprised me the first day, but we have a long way to go.”
A couple of things that should help the young guys up front is already being familiar with the offensive scheme and a good group of seniors to help lead them along the way.
“They’ve been running this offense since they were in junior high, so they know exactly what we are asking of them,” Carter said. “It’s just the pace of the game. It picks up a lot from eighth grade to Friday nights. I think our group of seniors will pick those kids up and guide them in the right direction.”
Chico had 47 report on the first day of practice, and Carter expects that number to grow by the end of the week.
