Decatur cross country coach David Park had plenty of company Monday for workouts.
Forty-three high school runners were on hand for the first full week of practice. The Eagles and Lady Eagles officially started last Wednesday and ran the season-opening time trials.
“The ones we had came back in shape,” Park said.
The maturing members of the Eagles squad showed they may be ready to contend running lightning-quick times in the mile last week. The team, which has qualified for state the past two years, had seven runners under five minutes.
The Eagles return all of their top seven runners.
“They’ve got the opportunity,” Park said about his boys team. “What we do is up to them.”
Park said the girls team, loaded with underclassmen, is working hard to improve. The Class 3A bronze medalists graduated four seniors from among its top seven.
“They are still figuring it out,” Park said. “There is potential there.”
The Decatur squads will open the season Aug. 25 at Southlake Carroll with an eight-mile relay.
