About the time Chico’s 2012 homecoming game ended, the rain began to pour.

Up to that time, the Dragons’ offense did the pouring, rolling up 43 first-quarter points and amassing a 64-7 lead by halftime. As the skies opened up, the scoreboard read Chico 71 and the outgunned Dallas A+ Academy 13.

Senior quarterback Hunter York was the rainmaker, passing for 307 yards – 272 of it in the first half including seven touchdown passes. He ended the game 11-for-16 for 307 yards, and played only one series after halftime.

Chris Gilmore put the Dragons on the board with a five-yard reception with 9:42 left in the first quarter, as Dalton Tullos kicked the first of nine extra points for a 7-0 Chico lead.

Forty seconds later, Tyler Byers forced a fumble in the Dallas end zone. The visitors recovered, but took a safety and it was 9-0.

It took less than a minute for the Dragons to add another touchdown, this one on a 40-yard pass from York to Dylan Hightower – the first of his four trips to paydirt. Tullos’ kick made it 16-0, but Dallas bounced back with a 79-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Hugo Rios.

Elijio Rios’ kick made it 16-7 and it looked like a contest.

But the final eight minutes of the opening stanza saw four more Chico touchdowns: a three-yard pass to Matt Carter, a 33-yard pass to Carter, a 36-yard pass to Hightower and a 22-yard run by Hightower. It was 43-7 after just 12 minutes of play.

The Dragons put up only 21 points in the second period on an 18-yard pass from York to Josh Windham, a 12-yard scamper by Hightower, and a 25-yard pass from York to Carter, his third touchdown reception of the evening.

The Dragons emptied the bench and ran the ball in the second half in an effort to keep the clock moving. Dallas scored with 5:46 left in the third when Jonathan Alcaia recovered a Chico fumble in the end zone.

But Chico answered as Kaylen Johnson went 19-yards for the final touchdown with 10:46 left.

The win leaves the Dragons 3-1 while Dallas A+ falls to 3-2. Chico will play host to the Gainesville State School next Friday.
