Chico down but still seeking wins

By Clay Corbett | Published Wednesday, October 31, 2012

{{{*}}}The Chico Dragons saw their playoff hopes dashed at the hands of the Collinsville Pirates last week. With the playoffs no longer a possibility, the Dragons have to turn their attention to closing out the district schedule with two wins.

Chico (4-4, 0-3) travels to Blue Ridge (2-6, 1-2) Friday. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

“The bottom-line is, it’s just disappointing,” Chico coach Stephen Carter said about missing the playoffs. “We had three opportunities to get in the playoffs, and we didn’t get it done. Now we just have to try to finish the season 6-4.”

The Dragons needed a win against Valley View, Lindsay or Collinsville to grab one of the three playoff spots but came up empty.

They still have a chance to end the season with a winning record, if they can get a win in their final two games.

It shouldn’t be too difficult a task, with the toughest part of their schedule behind them. Blue Ridge and Trenton, Chico’s final two opponents, are a combined 1-5 against the rest of the district.

Blue Ridge is coming off their lone district win, 46-7 over Trenton. They have been shut out by both Collinsville and Valley View.

Chico is trying to break a three-game losing streak. Their last victory came on Oct. 6 against Gainesville State.

“I hope we can respond this week,” Carter said. “We have a chance to end the season on a positive note, even though we’re very disappointed we are not in the playoffs.”
