The clock went out somewhere in the second quarter at Chico Friday night – but to tell the truth, the Dragons had already put out the lights for Texas Leadership Charter Academy by then.

Chico scored 37 unanswered points in the first half enroute to a 43-6 win. The clock came back in the second half, but the visiting Eagles had no such luck.

The victory put the Dragons’ record at 2-1 on the young season as they prepare to host Dallas A+ and Gainesville State School the next two weeks.

Quarterback Hunter York put up some gaudy numbers as the Dragons took to the air for 327 yards on 17-of-23 passing with just one interception. York hit Matt Carter on a 19-yarder to open the scoring wtih 5:33 left in the first quarter.

Just over a minute later, Darrion Riggs plowed in from the 1 for Chico’s only rushing score of the night, and a two-point conversion made it 15-0.

The Dragons scored three times in the second quarter on a 43-yard pass from York to Dylan Hightower, a 16-yard TD strike to Josh Windham, and a 62-yard bomb to Chris Gilmore.

TLCA had its only highlight of the game early in the third when Brandon Garcia broke an 85-yard touchdown run.

Less than three minutes later, York answered with a 38-yard scoring toss to Windham.

Carter caught four passes for 94 yards and a touchdown. Dylan Hightower, Josh Windham and Chris Gilmore also hauled in touchdown tosses, with Windham collecting two.

Carter picked off three passes on defense as well, as Chico intercepted TLCA four times.

TLCA’s Brandon Garcia carried the ball 21 times for 109 yards, but three lost fumbles plagued the Eagles. Hightower carried 16 times for the Dragons and amassed 162 yards.

“I was really proud of the kids,” coach Stephen Carter said after the game. “They’ve come a long way in the last two years, and they really showed some leadership tonight.”
