Bulldogs back up to snuff

By Clay Corbett | Published Wednesday, October 10, 2012

For the first time since week zero, the Alvord Bulldogs will be at full strength when they take the field Friday. Alvord is coming off their bye week ready to open up district play.

The Bulldogs (1-4) travel to Nocona (5-0) for their district opener Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

“We should be all back since the first game of the season,” Alvord head coach Curtis Enis said. “Kyle Rice, Joe Randall and Jordan Locklear will all be back.”

The return of the Alvord backfield will be a welcome sight to an offense that has struggled as of late. Opposing defenses have been loading the box to stop the Bulldog attack, but the return of Locklear should loosen things up.

After missing a month, rust could be a concern for the senior signal-caller, but Enis says Locklear has looked good in practice.

“He’s been throwing the ball really well,” Enis said. “His ability to run the ball will help a lot, too.”

Cassidy Patterson will back-up Locklear this week, after taking the snaps for the Bulldogs against Gunter.

Randall will begin preparing for a wildcat package, and will be the back-up quarterback after this week if anything happens to Locklear.

It turned out to be a perfect time for the bye week, and Alvord took full advantage.

“It allowed us to relax and clean some things up,” Enis said. “We’ve played a tough schedule but it showed our warts, and we went back to work on that stuff.”

Alvord’s will see two of the toughest teams in the district, in Nocona and Holliday the first two weeks of league play.

The Indians are coming off a 24-8 win over Valley View and are averaging 336 rushing yards per game.

“We open with two of the best teams in our district,” Enis said. “But everybody is in good spirits, and we are ready to get going.”
