When a football team is still playing on Thanksgiving weekend, you know they have had a successful season.
With a 21-15 win over Farmersville last week, that’s exactly what the Boyd Yellowjackets have achieved.
Boyd (7-4) will take on the Winnsboro Raiders (7-3) in the Class 2A Division I Region II area round Friday at Rockwall’s Wilkerson-Sanders Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
“It’s always nice when you’re playing during Thanksgiving,” Boyd coach Brandon Hopkins said. “You want to get into the playoffs, win a game and keep the run going.”
Boyd’s defense is coming off its best performance of the year keeping Farmersville out of the endzone during the second half last week. They also recovered a key fumble that allowed the Yellowjackets to run out the clock.
Boyd had some fumble issues of their own that they have been addressing this week in practice.
“We’ve talked about it and worked on it,” Hopkins said. “We did a good job for most of the year holding on to the ball. Farmersville did a good job of trying to rip the ball away.”
Winnsboro was the champion of District 7-2A. They rolled through league play with six straight wins, scoring at least 38 points in each game.
The Raiders are an old-school football team that score all their points running the option. It’s an offense Boyd hasn’t seen this season.
“They’ll run a double tight veer option,” Hopkins said. “They might throw it four or five times a game. We are going to have to play assignment football.”
Boyd should feel pretty good about the balance of their offensive output, too. The Yellowjackets completed eight of their 11 passes against Farmersville for 128 yards and picked up 212 more on the ground.BOYD (7-4) VS. WINNSBORO (7-3)
