The Boyd Yellowjackets picked up their first win of the season and Brandon Hopkins captured his first win as head coach last week. Boyd will try to ride that momentum into another tough test Friday.
The Godley Wildcats (2-0) travel to Boyd (1-1) for a 7:30 kickoff.
Boyd rallied last week to get a huge come from behind win against Palmer.
“It was a good win for us,” Hopkins said. “I never really thought about my first win or anything like that. It was just a good team effort.”
Fino Cardona accounted for all six Yellowjacket touchdowns. He ran for four, caught another and returned an interception return. He also rushed for 220 yards.
The lanes may be tougher to find against an undefeated Godley team. The Wildcats were 10-2 as an area finalist a year ago. They return 11 starters and are coming off a 32-0 win over Faith Christian.
Godley’s strength is the offensive line led by tackle Blake Washington (6-0, 270).
“They are very tough and big up front,” Hopkins said. “They are bigger and stronger than we are, so we will have to use our quickness.”
The Wildcats will run out of the spread but still like to run the ball right at the defense.
Defensively Godley will use an attacking style defense that will try to cause havoc in the Boyd backfield.
“We have to have good protection for Blake [McDonald],” Hopkins said. “They will bring a lot of pressure so we will have our hands full. If we get down early, it could be a tough fight.”
