After a slow start Thursday, the No. 13 Alvord Lady Bulldogs rallied to get three straight wins at their Samantha Rogers Memorial Basketball Tournament over the weekend to improve their record to 10-6.“I was proud of the way we played,” Alvord coach Rob Schmucker said. “We improved in all five games. I’m happy with where we are at.”
With district play less than a week away, the Lady Bulldogs finished their own tournament dominating the competition in their final three games, after losing their first two contests to Australia and Celina. The Australia team went on to defeat Celina in the championship.
“It’s going to be a battle every week,” Schmucker said. “Top to bottom it’s a very tough district.”
Alvord ended the three-day tournament with a 62-29 win over Decatur. The Lady Bulldogs used a 16-4 first quarter to propel them to the victory.
Marissa Schedcik led the way with 20 points and Ariel Rogers had 14. Sam Hahn finished with 10. Carley King and Katie Claborn each added eight.
On Friday Alvord disposed of Coram Deo, 58-20. Rogers had 12, and King finished with 11. Claborn and Lauren Hart each scored nine.
Earlier Friday the Lady Bulldogs defeated Borger, 63-22. Hahn led the way with 18, and King had 15. Hart and Rogers both finished with seven.
In their second game Tuesday, Alvord fell to the No. 5 ranked team in Class 3A, Celina, 54-44. The Lady Bobcats outscored the Lady Bulldogs in every quarter.
Schedcik led the way with 12 and Claborn had nine. Hahn added eight and Rogers tossed in six.
Alvord opened the tournament with a 68-46 loss to the Australia team. Australia scored at least 15 points in every quarter.
Claborn finished with 13, and King added 10. Hahn poured in eight, and Rogers scored seven.
The Lady Bulldogs open district play Tuesday at home against Peaster.
