Alvord faces tough road game

By Clay Corbett | Published Wednesday, September 12, 2012

With the injury to Jordan Locklear last week, the Alvord Bulldogs will have to shuffle their lineup as they get ready for their first road game of the season against the Krum Bobcats.

Alvord (1-1) travels to Krum (2-0) for a 7:30 kickoff Friday.

Locklear will be out four to six weeks after suffering a sprained MCL. Casen Baker, who stepped in at quarterback last week from his fullback position, will continue to get the snaps. Baker finished 1-5 for 10 yards in relief. He also rushed for 36 yards and a touchdown.

“I took him out to the practice field at halftime and went over about 10 plays with him,” Alvord coach Curtis Enis explained about getting Baker ready to go during last week’s game against Ponder. “He can throw and is accurate, but he has none of the mechanics of a quarterback.”

Baker will try to broaden his playbook as he gets ready for Krum, but with a difference between quarterbacks Enis says they may have to change things up.

“Locklear is more of a pocket passer,” Enis said. “Casen is more of a runner and a thrower. We will have to incorporate his strengths into the game.”

With Baker out at fullback, sophomore Troy Morales will step in at that position and take most of Baker’s snaps at linebacker, too.

Freshman Shane McKinney should see some more snaps in Locklear’s absence backing up Morales.

Krum is coming off two straight victories to begin the season with wins against Caddo Mills and Farmersville.

The Bobcats like to spread things and will look to throw deep when they get the chance.

“Krum is a lot bigger than we are,” Enis said. “They don’t have anybody that plays both ways. We really need to be on our game offensively and keep our defense off the field.”
