Dear Editor:

Is the Tea party Sweetheart Ted Cruz wanting to scrap the campaign finance laws and allow special interest the ability to donate an unlimited amount of money to a politician’s campaign?

This is what he said in Tampa, so let’s ask him to be sure in a debate, if he will debate.

  1. If you back up and look at the entire speech instead of concentrating on this talking point, you will find a much different meaning behind Ted’s speach. It looks like you did a cut and paste directly from Paul Sadler’s website. Here is an excerpt from Ted’s speech, to which I give full credit:

“What happens now is they [donors] can’t write the check to the campaign so they write them to a third party who run ads, and I can’t talk to the third party and so this third party super PAC is running ads supporting me. I have no input in what they say,” he said. “It’s a ridiculous system.”

If you look at it from this perspective, it makes a lot of sense, and it looks more like what Ted wants is campaign reform, not a repeal. The Super Pac system is bogus, like a dog hiding under a rug with it’s butt sticking up in the air for everyone to see. A slight of the hand if you will. Incumbents save tons of money by using the public’s resources to campaign with, which does make it one sided.

  2. Tracy Smith says:

The Point, It’s Gray Area…. Let him say so in a debate so we can ask him directly. In his speech, he didn’t say he was against what those Super Pacs are doing either.

  3. I have to disagree Tracy. What I put was a direct quote from his speech where he said “it’s a ridiculous system.” And I do agree. The previous campaign reform didn’t do what was intended. What it did was take accountability away from the politicians by putting money into the Super Pacs who by law are not under the authority of the candidates. It’s like whatever you do, the politicians will figure out a way to pervade the system. And that goes for the left AND the right. It’s just a totally jacked up system.
