Whether you ride a motorcycle or not, the 13th annual Wise County Toy Run has something for you – and a big something for children in Wise County.
The Decatur-to-Bridgeport motorcycle run takes place on Sunday, Dec. 2. Registration begins at 10 a.m. at the Decatur Intermediate School parking lot, just off FM 51 South. The parade starts at 12:30 p.m. and ends at Bridgeport’s City Park shelter house.
Coffee and donuts will be served in the morning and “Willie’s Famous Chili” will be dished up free on the Bridgeport end of the run. Bikers can register for $5 and be in the running for door prizes, a 50-50 auction and awards including “Best Dresser,” “Best Custom,” “Best Cruiser” and “Best Metric Motorcycle.” The top three in each category get plaques.
Whether you ride or not, all it takes is a $10 donation or a new, unwrapped toy per person to get involved.
The run goes on rain or shine, snow or sleet – including last year, when riders made the parade in the snow. But the motto is, “We Ride for the Kids” and that means weather will not stop the festivities.
Since the event began in 2000, nearly 2,000 people from all over the D-FW Metroplex, North Texas and southern Oklahoma have attended.
“We are excited to invite everyone out once again to participate in our motorcycle run,” said Ed Beckley, spokesman for the event. “We ride so we can help provide Christmas cheer for those who would have none. What we do will help so many kids.
“Even if you don’t ride, come join us and bring an unwrapped toy or a $10 donation and know that you are part of history.”
Over the Toy Run’s history, those taking part have rounded up more than 5,000 toys and over $48,000 which was used to help people in Wise County with a focus on kids. In addition to helping the Wise Area Relief Mission (WARM), the funds have helped build playgrounds for handicapped children, helped families with heat and electric bills, provided Christmas dinners, and more.
The event is completely volunteer-run – no one gets paid or receives any favors for being part of this effort.
“We do this for the kids of Wise County and the underprivileged families that need a helping hand to maybe enjoy the holidays,” Beckley said.
This year’s Wise County Toy Run will once again feature Biker Santa and a police escort from Decatur to Bridgeport. A drawing will be held for an enclosed 14-foot v-nose trailer, with tickets on sale at $10 each at Bridgeport Automotive. A maximum of 2,000 tickets will be sold.
Toys may be dropped off in advance of the event at P&H Muffler Shop or Bridgeport Automotive, and those who would like to make donations may send them to Wise County Toy Run, P.O. Box 891, Bridgeport, TX, 76431.
