One week into the Alvord Cares summer feeding program, the project already appears to be a success.

On the first week, 11 families (a total of 24 people) picked up food. Volunteer Kandy Shelton said it was exactly the number of people who applied for help.

“It went very smoothly last week,” Shelton said Monday. “We had tables set up for them to sign in and had a food demonstration at another table. If they stayed for the demonstration, they got an incentive food. And the children enjoyed the snack they made (tortilla roll-ups).”

On Tuesday, the program was on appropriate serving sizes.

The program is modeled after the Decatur Cares summer feeding program that began last year. Students who live in the Alvord School District who qualify for free and reduced price lunches can participate in the program, which will provide food for five meals per week during the summer months.

On Monday, volunteers gathered at the First United Methodist Church in Alvord to put together this week’s sacks of food. In less than an hour, they had filled 24 sacks.

Pam Harris, who along with others at the church helped organize the project, said the community had responded with enough donations to fund the program through the summer, but they hoped to continue raising money to use toward future years of the program.

“People can make donations at the bank (Legend Bank in Alvord) or the church (First United Methodist Church of Alvord),” Harris said. If mailing a donation to the church, use P.O. Box 127 rather than the street address.

She added that it is not too late to apply for help. Applications can be picked up from any of the volunteers. Call (940) 427-5575 or 427-7293 for an application.
