School board adopts budget and tax rate

Property owners living in the Boyd School District can expect the same tax rate as last year.

On Monday night, the board of trustees unanimously passed a tax rate of $1.225 per $100 valuation for the 2012-2013 school year. The rate is the same as last year, and 1.5 cents less than the rate was two years ago.

Of the tax rate, $1.04 goes to maintenance and operation. The remaining 18.5 cents is for debt services.

The board also approved a budget for the 2012-2013 school year that totaled $11.4 million. The budget remained approximately the same size as last year.

Maintenance and operations costs total $10.8 million. Debt service comes to $1.5 million and food service to $621,118.

Some of the new items in the budget include salary increases and above state base reinstated, CSCOPE aligned curriculum, a part-time school resource officer, a timer for track and field events, new band instruments, uniforms for food service staff, 3 percent salary increase for maintenance and custodians, new HVACs at the intermediate school, uniforms for custodians and maintenance staff and an additional custodian. Extra funds were also allocated to the career and technology departments, including a chicken coop, supplies for the greenhouse, an animal barn and $50,000 for technology supplies.
