Wise Regional Health System is expanding its services to the southeast.

Hospital officials announced this week that Wise Regional will open Parkway Surgical Hospital on North Tarrant Parkway not far from the intersection of U.S. 81/287 and Interstate 35 in Tarrant County.

Like the name implies, the facility will be an inpatient surgical facility that will include four operating rooms, two procedure rooms and 12 inpatient beds. The 29,053-square-foot facility will also include laboratory, radiology and preoperative services and an emergency room.

The hospital will provide a number of services including spine, orthopedics, cardiology, plastic surgery, pain and gastroenterology.

Wise Regional CEO Steve Summers said the hospital studied the demographics of the area, including growth projections, and also determined that many people living in the area were already coming to Wise Regional for services.

“The development of an inpatient surgical hospital is a progressive step in continuing expansion of services to our region,” Summers said in a written release announcing the new facility. “We have reviewed the geographical range of the market that our facilities serve. This planned expansion will enable Wise Regional to provide services to a rapidly developing area on the Highway 287 corridor, between Decatur and the Alliance Airport/Heritage Trace area. We believe that this identified high growth area has a need for the services that this type of facility will provide and will certainly complement the full range of hospital services being provided in Decatur.”

The facility has been designed so that three more surgical rooms could be added in the future along with 12 additional beds.

Also, the new hospital would be an anchor facility for as many as four other medical office buildings planned for the property.

Parkway Surgical Hospital is expected to employ 35 full-time positions in the first year of operation.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $12.8 million. The hospital will lease the building and will have the option to purchase the facility within three years. The major investor in the project is Long View Equity Partners of Austin.

The developer for the project is Office Equity Solutions of Southlake, and Mike Hale is the architect working on the building’s design. The general contractor is Skiles Group Inc.

Summers said he doesn’t want people to think that by opening a new facility outside of the county that the focus is being taken away from serving Wise County.

“We see this as a means to an end, to still be able to continue and grow what we’re doing here (in Wise County),” he said. ” … This (new hospital) is expected to generate funds to support what we’re doing up here.”

The Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Alliance is located about two miles north of the future Parkway Surgical Hospital. Summers said he does not see the Wise Regional facility competing with the other hospital because of the different kinds of services offered.

Ground could be broken on the project as soon as September, and Summers said they hope to complete the project by late 2013.
