Home lost to fire

Fire destroyed a home in the Cottondale area early Sunday morning.

Fire departments from Cottondale, Boonsville/Balsora, Salt Creek and Paradise were dispatched to the blaze, which was reported around 3 a.m. in the 100 block of Private Road 3697 off County Road 3673.

The first units on the scene reported that a double-wide mobile home was on fire with approximately 50 percent of the structure already lost.

It was not clear to firemen right away if anyone was inside. The home’s owners, Mary and Gene Mitchell, were later discovered to be out of town, and no one was in the home at the time of the fire.

The home was a total loss.

Cottondale Assistant Fire Chief Rainer Mundy said the cause of the fire is unknown, and the state fire marshal’s office was contacted to investigate. Wise County is temporarily without a fire marshal following the recent resignation of former Fire Marshal Marc Dodd.

The fire departments remained on the scene until just after 7 a.m.
