The Christmas season arrives with a flourish this weekend.
As many Wise County families begin putting up their Christmas trees and stringing lights around their homes, local communities are kicking off a month of holiday events with lighted parades, shopping extravaganzas and a visit or two from Santa.
Here’s a sampling to help you plan a festive weekend.
EAT WITH SANTA – Breakfast with Santa is 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Bridgeport Community Center. Tickets are $3 for adults, $2 for kids at the door (cash and check only). No advance tickets available.
ANGEL GARDEN – The angel garden will be lit Saturday, Dec. 1 on the Chico Square. Bring your lighted angel with remembrance plaque, four tent stakes and an outside extension cord. Angels will remain on the Square until Saturday, Jan. 5. For more information, call Tammy Sosa at (940) 393-1726.
PARADE OF LIGHTS – The Parade of Lights in Decatur is Saturday, Dec. 1. Line-up begins at 5 p.m. behind Eagle Stadium. Judging is at 5:30, and the parade begins at 6:30. It will travel west on Walnut Street, left on Washburn, and then turn left on Main, passing through the Decatur Square. Call the Decatur Chamber of Commerce at (940) 627-3107 for more information.
MOONLIGHT MADNESS – Decatur stores will be open late citywide Saturday, Dec. 1, and Santa Claus will be on the Square to visit with children. Parents may bring their own cameras for photos. The choirs from the First Baptist Churches of Alvord, Decatur and Paradise will perform as one group – Voices of Christmas – along with other live music performances.
TOUR OF HOMES – The Decatur Women’s Club Tour of Homes is 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2. Tickets cost $15 and can be purchased at iCopy in Decatur, North Texas Bank and Patti’s Hair Parlor & Etc. or from any Decatur Women’s Club member. Six homes will be featured on the tour.
TOY RUN – The 13th Annual Wise County Toy Run and Motorcycle Rally is Sunday, Dec. 2. It starts at the McCarroll Middle School Parking lot in Decatur with registration at 10 a.m. The ride begins at 12:30 p.m. rain or shine and ends at Harwood Park in Bridgeport, where participants are treated to Willie’s “famous chili.” Participants should each bring a new, unwrapped toy or $10. Biker Santa will attend the event, and there will also be a 50/50 raffle, auction and raffle for an enclosed 14-foot trailer. Tickets are available at Bridgeport Automotive.
