And then there was one.
After an application process and background checks, only one candidate remains eligible for the county fire marshal position.
But he may not be the one.
County commissioners decided Monday to re-advertise for the post at the recommendation of the search committee.
County Treasurer Katherine Hudson, who is on the committee, said four applicants were submitted for background checks, but two of them withdrew their names at that point.
Of the remaining two, one did not pass the background check, and Hudson said the two firefighters on the search committee weren’t comfortable with the remaining candidate.
The position will be advertised for 30 more days. The current lone finalist will still be in the running for the position, unless he withdraws.
The county has been without a fire marshal for six months since former Fire Marshal Marc Dodd resigned in April.
