City joins county in EPA protest

By Phil Major | Published Wednesday, July 11, 2012

Decatur City Council has added its voice to those protesting an Environmental Protection Agency ruling on Wise County air quality.

The EPA has proposed adding the county to the Metroplex nonattainment area, which would come with a string of compliance issues impacting consumers and businesses.

The council passed a resolution Monday supporting the county’s efforts to have the ruling revisited. Other local entities and business groups are being asked to add their support.

In explaining the request for support, City Manager Brett Shannon noted that Wise County was added despite no air quality monitors in the county.

Among the ramifications would be stricter vehicle inspections, lowered speed limits and added requirements for some businesses.

“This puts us on record as being in support of (the county’s) position,” said Mayor Martin Woodruff. “This (EPA) action does not appear to be supported by scientific evidence.”

The council welcomed its newest member, Susan Cocanougher. She was sworn in to complete the unexpired council term of Woodruff, who was elected mayor in May.
