Burglars target downtown businesses

By Brandon Evans | Published Wednesday, October 31, 2012

One or more burglars hit three businesses in downtown Decatur sometime between Monday night and early Tuesday morning.

Two of the victimized businesses were right across the street from each other in the 100 block of Washburn Street. The suspect or suspects pried open the back door to Patti’s Hair Parlor and proceeded to steal an undisclosed amount of cash, said Decatur Police Chief Rex Hoskins.

“They also broke into Dr. Tad Billmire’s (optometry) office across the street,” Hoskins said. “It was about the same. They pried open the back door and money was stolen.”

A couple of blocks east in the 300 block of East Walnut Street, La Cena Restaurant was also broken into. This time the still-unknown burglar or burglars were braver, prying open the front door on their way to stealing cash.

The money at the different locations was either stored in a bank bag or a metal cash box. None of the businesses had an alarm system. The burglaries all occurred sometime between 6 p.m. and 6 or 7 a.m.

Hoskins had some advice for other business owners in the area.

“Make sure all money is out of the building,” he said. “Either take it home or deposit it in the bank. Leave some lights on and hopefully have an alarm system installed.”
