BBQ fundraiser to benefit volunteer fire department

Think you have the recipe for the tastiest brisket? Or the secret ingredient for delectable chicken or finger-licking pork spare ribs?

If so, the Bridgeport Volunteer Fire Department invites you to participate in the department’s first-ever BBQ Cookoff fundraiser next weekend at the Northwest OHV Park, 673 PR 1540, in Bridgeport.

The cookoff is sanctioned by the Lone Star BBQ Society, a non-profit organization that coordinates barbecue competitions.

“They’ll provide a head judge that knows all of the rules,” said Kyle Bloodworth, volunteer firefighter and society member. “They make everything on an even playing field.”

Though some of the society’s teams will enter this competition, it is open to the public.

Entry fee is $100 for all three meats – brisket, pork spare ribs and chicken – or $35 each meat. There will be a 60 percent payback for first, second and third place.

Cooks can also enter a jackpot competition for best beans for $10.

Cooks are asked to arrive Friday for registration.

The cookoff fundraiser also coincides with the department’s annual ride night at the park.

For $30, riders can navigate trails of all sorts – steep, rocky, dense – from 8 a.m. Saturday to noon Sunday.

“We’re hoping for a good time while raising money for the volunteer fire department,” Bloodworth said. “We invite the public to join us and support the department, whether it’s to compete in the cookoff, ride the trails in the park or just come out and visit.”
