Author to speak at Alzheimer’s Caregiver Seminar

By Messenger Staff | Published Wednesday, June 27, 2012

Dr. Howard Gruetzner, education and family care specialist for the Alzheimer’s Association-North Texas Chapter, will be the featured speaker at this year’s Alzheimer’s Caregiver Seminar, “Prescription for Healthy Caregiving.”

The seminar is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, June 28, at the Decatur Civic Center, 2010 W. U.S. 380. The free event includes lunch.

Gruetzner will speak on the importance of being a healthy caregiver when caring for an individual with Alzheimer’s disease or another related dementia.

The challenges of caring for a person with dementia are well chronicled. These caregivers suffer from higher rates of depression, emotional stress, high blood pressure and even a higher mortality rate than their non-caregiving peers.

Gruetzner will share techniques for coping with the role of caregiver and teach participants how to maintain mental and physical health.

He has written a book, “Alzheimer’s: A Caregiver’s Guide and Sourcebook,” which will be for sale at the event.

Seating is limited, so registration is encouraged. Registration at the door will be permitted as space allows. To register, call Shelly Young with the Alzheimer’s Association-North Central Texas Chapter at 800-272-3900 or email shelly.young@alz.org.
