Maggard died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012, in Azle.
Born June 11, 1922, in Harlan County, Ky., to James and Margaret (Hubbard) Maggard, he was a waterline installer. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at age 17, landed at Omaha Beach and fought in the European Theater of World War II.
Maggard was a lifetime member of the Bowie Veterans of Foreign Wars. He fished, played the guitar and fed the local homeless.
He is survived by son James Carroll of East Liverpool, Ohio; daughters Patricia Carroll of Calcutta, Ohio, and Margaret Carroll of Houston; sister Phyllis Bowling and husband, Roger, of Louisville, Ky.; and other family members.
