Funeral for Norma Christine (Boyd) Cook, 84, of Saint Jo was July 26 at the First United Methodist Church in Saint Jo with the Revs. Larry Kruger and Larry Coleman officiating. Burial followed at Perryman Cemetery in Forestburg.
Cook died Monday, July 23, 2012, in Wichita Falls.
Born April 10, 1928, in Saint Jo to Robert Paul and Lillian Hurley Boyd, she married Fred Wayne Cook Oct. 18, 1947, in Saint Jo. He preceded her in death in 1969 at age 42, and she was then faced with raising and caring for their five children and fully providing for them.
She graduated Saint Jo High School in 1945. Soon thereafter, she received a temporary Civil Service Rating as a clerk-typist and became a filing clerk at Camp Howze in Gainesville and then a clerk-typist in the administrative office in the hospital at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls.
Cook later served as deputy clerk for Glen Pribble in the Montague County Clerk’s Office from 1946 until 1949. She then worked in the Russell-Newman Lingerie Factory from 1970 until 1976 and was deputy clerk for Lynn Grey in the Montague County Clerk’s Office from 1976 to 1979.
Cook was elected and served as Montague County Clerk from 1979 to 1993.
She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Saint Jo, United Methodist Women, Saint Jo Order of the Eastern Star, Saint Jo Friendship Club and the County and District Clerk’s Association. She was a past member of the First United Methodist Church of Forestburg and the Saint Jo 20th Century Club. She was active in these organizations until declining health prevented further participation.
She met monthly at the Saint Jo Dairy Queen with her friends and classmates from her graduating class. Cook was inducted into the Saint Jo High School Ex-Students Hall of Fame.
She was preceded in death by her husband; and grandchildren Stella Cook and Nathan Cook.
She is survived by daughters Frieda Talley and husband, Larry, of Chico and Deanna Sauer and husband, Mark, of Lewisville; sons Larry Cook and wife, Phyllis, Doyle Cook and wife, Mary Lou, and Ricky Cook and wife, Nancy, all of Saint Jo; and brother Gerald Boyd and wife, Billie, of Saint Jo.
Survivors also include grandchildren Kristen Tribe and husband, Shane, of Decatur, Jennifer Rakowitz and husband, Kody, of New Braunfels, Brandi Gutzler and husband, Jeff, of Krum, Jason Cook and wife, Mary, of Saint Jo, Jacob Cook and wife, Magan, of Saint Jo, LeAnn Hoover and husband, Chris, of Saint Jo, Brent Sauer and wife, Erica, of Frisco, Bridget Sauer of San Antonio, Daniel Cook and wife, Kaci, of Justin and Stefanie Cook of Lewisville.
She is also survived by great-grandchildren Luke Tribe, Allie Tribe, Jarrett Gutzler, Jackson Gutzler, Courtney Shipman, Tyler Cook, Cooper Cook, Kaylin Cook and Logan Hoover.
Pallbearers were Jason Cook, Jacob Cook, Daniel Cook, Brent Sauer, Shane Tribe, Kody Rakowitz, Chris Hoover and Jeff Gutzler.
