HELPING THE HUNGRY - Market Place employee Odessa Presson (left) is presented with a cash prize for outstanding contribution to the fund-raising effort by co-owner Margie Shelton.

Customers of Market Place grocery store in Decatur recently donated $4,249 to Meals on Wheels. At $5 per meal, that calculated to 850 meals provided to Wise County seniors.

Margie Shelton, one of the store’s owners, serves on the Wise County Committee on Aging board, and she suggested that anyone who would like to help provide meals for seniors can mail a donation to 300 N. Trinity, Decatur, Texas 76234 or donate via PayPal on the Meals on Wheels Wise County Facebook page. You can also help by adopting a senior, giving a memorial gift, donating a clunker car, assisting in fund raising, volunteering and serving on the board of directors.

Meals on Wheels national statistics show 1 in 9 seniors are in jeopardy of being hungry. The 2010 Census shows 12.5 percent of 59,000 Wise County residents to be over 65. Projections for 2020 show the number of seniors doubling.
