Bridgeport leads cities in sales tax gains

Retail sales in Decatur and Bridgeport headed in opposite directions in June, according to the monthly sales tax allocation from the state comptroller’s office.

That gave Bridgeport the county’s largest rebate check for August at $282,127. It is up $63,000 from August 2011, an increase of 28.8 percent. For the year Bridgeport has received $2,186,304, a similar gain of 28.7 percent.

The August rebate is for retail sales made in June and reported to the state in July.

Decatur’s rebate of $267,373 is the lowest for the year by $13,000 and the lowest since April 2011. It is down by more than $100,000 from the August rebate in 2011.

But for the year the city remains ahead of last year’s pace and on track to break the 2007 sales tax record for the fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30.

For the calendar year, the city has received $2,588,231 in sales taxes through eight months, ahead of last year by $27,000 or just more than 1 percent.

The two cities make up more than three-fourths of the sales in Wise County cities.

The 12 cities received $701,055 in August compared to $751,156 a year ago, for a decline of 6.66 percent.

For the year the cities remain ahead of last year, receiving $5,835,174, up almost 8 percent.

For the year, Alvord, Aurora, Newark, Paradise, Rhome and Runaway Bay have seen higher sales tax income than in 2011, while Boyd, Chico, Lake Bridgeport and New Fairview remain behind last year. Those four had lower rebates in August, along with Decatur and Aurora (which was down slightly).

August was Decatur’s first month in the past 11 to see a lower rebate than the previous year and broke a string of five consecutive record months.

Rhome has the largest annual gain by percentage, at more than 40 percent.

The state sends cities their share monthly, which is 1.5 percent for all Wise County cities except Aurora, which collects 1 percent. The state collects 6.25 percent and the county a half-percent.

Wise County has earned $3,474,715 from sales taxes this year, which is up more than 20 percent. The monthly rebate is $433,806, down 2.3 percent from a year ago.
