A raging fire destroyed a vacant home on County Road 2526 near the Sycamore community Thursday afternoon.
Greenwood/Slidell, Decatur and Alvord firefighters battled the blaze on a heavily wooded lot.
“It was fully involved when we got here,” said Greenwood/Slidell Fire Chief Adam North. “We kept it contained to the one structure.”
North said the cause of the fire will be under investigation.
The hot, furious fire sent flames more than 20 feet into the air and blanketed the area with ash and smoke. One firefighter, Rodney Yard, had to receive treatment for heat exhaustion after battling the blaze.
The fire was reported shortly after 3 p.m.
A nearby resident Richard Argraves said the structure was the homestead of the deceased J.M. Carpenter.“No one’s lived in it in several years,” Argraves said. “The old house has been here a while.”
Argraves said it was a one-story home with a two-car garage that had a bedroom above it.
