Walk Across Texas results

The 14th Annual Walk Across Texas top awards were recently presented to three teams.

First place with 2,064 miles was Young at Heart 2012. Team members included captain Amy White, Shelli Reta, Scott White, Ami Doss, Donna Donaghey, Alexandra Rodarte, Tammy Rainey and Laura Davila.

Second place was the Volts from Wise Electric with 1,966 miles. Members are captain Jerry Brooks, Chuck Peace, Shane McCandless, Tony Norman, Robyn Hodges, Mark Wilson, Renee Wilson and Anne Sollee.

In third place was the Outlets. Team captain was Anna Wallace with members Rick Wallace, Dennis Lee, Chris Walsh, Shirley Donley, Sara Myers, Kelly Myers and Rayce Cantwell. They logged 1,566 miles.

Additional teams that achieved the milestone of Walking Across Texas were: fourth place, Greenwood Go Getters, 1,293 miles; fifth place, Wise Sole Steppers with 1,129 miles; sixth place, Kilowatts (Wise Electric) with 1,128 miles; seventh place, We Willing Walkers with 1,052 miles; followed by Wise County 4-H Council in eighth place with 1,036 miles.

The Transformers (Wise Electric) placed ninth with 918 miles; in 10th place was Slidell High School with 897 miles; 11th place was Hubba Bubba with 889 miles; and finally in 12th place was the Amazing Walkers with 842 miles.

Special thanks to our team captains and individual members who logged over 16,323 total miles. The top individual walker was Jerry Brooks of the Volts from Wise Electric with 449 miles. Second-place walker was Shelli Reta of Young at Heart 2012 with 425 miles; and third-place walker was Javier Romero of the Wise Electric Transformers with 413 miles.

Congratulations to the 97 Walk Across Texas participants who completed all eight weeks. If they continue walking at the same level as during Walk Across Texas, they have the potential to save over $1,601,844 collectively in future health care costs by avoiding type 2 diabetes and reducing work absences.
