FIRE POSITIONS APPROVED - On a 5-2 vote, Decatur City Council approved three new fire fighting positions Monday as part of the 2012 budget. The positions will cost about $155,000 a year and come with a property tax increase to 66.3 cents per $100 valuation. Council members Jason Wren and Randy Bowker opposed the move, citing economic conditions. Coupled with a half-cent tax decrease for the city’s water district, Decatur tax payers will see a net 1.8-cent increase. The $13.2 million budget is up about $30,000 from last year.

MAN FLOWN FROM ACCIDENT – Tyrel Turner, 24, of Saginaw suffered life-threatening injuries after he pulled out in front of an 18-wheeler at the intersection of Farm Road 455 and Farm Road 51 near Slidell last night. The pickup was eastbound when it pulled out in front of the southbound tractor-trailer near 7 p.m. Greenwood/Slidell firefighters extricated Turner who then was flown to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. The driver of the 18-wheeler, Edward Hershverger, 31, of Michigan, was uninjured but visibly shook up from the wreck. He said he attempted to swerve and miss the pickup but was unable to avoid the collision. The road was shut down in both directions for more than an hour.

PICKUP OUTFITTED – Precinct 1 Constable Tom Bishop has turned his car in to the county. It was parked in front of the asset manager’s office Monday. In yesterday’s regular meeting, commissioners decided to keep the car and use it for parts instead of selling it at auction. They also approved paying invoices associated with the installation of equipment on the pickup that was recently purchased for Bishop. Invoices included one to Big Country Supply for $1,857.21 and one to Texas Trux for $1,987. Auditor Ann McCuiston said the county expects one more invoice from a business that removed the police radio and other electronic equipment from the car and installed it in the pickup. Bishop also had the pickup painted at an approximate cost of $1,300. He paid for this himself.
