Northwest senior Troy Taylor fought the fierce wind and competition Saturday in the Class 5A race at the University Interscholastic League cross country championships.
Taylor brought home an 18th-place finish, running a 16:17 on the 5K course at Round Rock’s Old Settlers Park.
“It was a good time in the 30 mph wind,” Taylor said. “The wind definitely played some mind games and messed with me a lot.”
The Rhome resident’s time was 42 seconds off the 15:35 he turned on the course the previous year to finish ninth.
Through 800 meters, Taylor looked to have a chance to get a medal in eighth place, just seconds behind the leaders. In the second mile, Taylor fell back to 20th, 30 seconds back of first place.
In the final 800 meters, Taylor moved up two spots to finish 1:01 behind the winner, Craig Nowak of Houston Cypress Woods.
The race wasn’t Taylor’s final high school race. He will run Saturday in the Nike South Regionals event at The Woodlands.
