The Slidell Greyhounds are headed back to Round Rock and the state meet for a second year in a row.

The Greyhounds earned the invite Saturday, taking third in the Class A Region II race at Arlington’s Vandergriff Park.

Slidell finished with 102 points. Eula claimed the region crown with 84 points and winning a tiebreaker by having the top sixth runner. Priddy was second also with 84 points.

“We accomplished what we wanted,” said Slidell’s Dylan Carnes. “Hopefully we can do better than last year.”

The Greyhounds finished 11 points ahead of fourth-place Poolville.

Slidell coach Todd McCormick said the team fought to earn the spot with their depth coming through when it mattered.

“We knew it was going to be close,” he said. “Our third, fourth and fifth runners are what pulled us through.”

Goldthwaite’s Manuel Lozoya won the individual region crown, running a 16:57 on the 5K course. Ross Rhoades of Priddy took second in 17:08.

Cord Hankins turned in Slidell’s top time, running 17:39 to take 11th. He was eight seconds back of earning an individual spot in the state meet.

“I ran very well,” Hankins said. “It was my best time.”
