Alvord’s Colton Redman won the regional powerlifting meet Saturday in Ponder, setting two regional records and qualifying for the state meet.
He was joined by Jackson Cunningham of Paradise as a state qualifier from Wise County in the 2A ranks, while two others, Tyler Cobb of Paradise and Trevor Richard of Chico, qualified as state alternates.
The state meet is March 26 in Abilene.
Redman won the 165-pound class with a record squat of 525 pounds and a record 515 pounds in deadlift on his way to a 1,320 total, to win his division by 100 pounds.
Cunningham put up a 1,590 total in the 275-pound class with a 635-pound squat, 430-pound bench press and 525-pound dead lift.
Cobb was third in the 198 class with lifts of 445, 270 and 470 pounds.
Richard benched 140 pounds, squatted 245 and deadlifted 300 for a 685 total and third place in the 114-pound class.
Chico teammate Troy Johnson placed fifth in the 114 class with a 650 total.
In the 148-pound class, Chico’s Victor Velasquez lifted 1,070 pounds and also placed fifth.
Also from Alvord, Jesse Brown was 10th in the 181-pound class with a 990-pound total.
In the 148 class, Thomas Trice of Alvord placed 10th with lifts totaling 900 pounds.
Alvord coach Lane Wilson noted that Redman broke his own record in the deadlift.
Chico coach Mike McAllister said this was the first time for Chico to qualify a lifter for the state meet.
