Paradise’s Carolina McDowell closed her powerlifting career in a familiar spot – the medal stand.
The senior took third place in her 123-pound class Saturday at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association championships in Corpus Christi.
“It feels good, like all my hard work has paid off in the end,” McDowell said.
It was the third time she has won a state medal after garnering fifth and third-place finishes as a sophomore and junior. McDowell was hoping to move up the medal stand.
“[Third] wasn’t what I wanted, but I’m happy with what I accomplished,” she said. “The competition was tough.”
McDowell lifted a personal best 750 pounds. Her squat of 315 matched her previous best. She followed that with a bench press of 135. She closed her career with a personal best 300 pound deadlift.
“The last deadlift I was determined to get because it was my last lift of powerlifting,” McDowell said.
“It was fun, but I’m sad it’s over.”
