The Slidell Greyhounds were unable to move up the ranks in Class A Saturday in a return trip to Round Rock.
The Greyhounds finished 12th in the Class A race at the University Interscholastic League cross country championships. Slidell was 10th in 2010.
Despite being unable to record a better finish, Slidell senior Dylan Carnes praised his teammates and their efforts.
“I felt like we ran way better than last year,” Carnes said. “The whole team did good.”
Slidell finished with 301 points. Boys Ranch won the state title with 72.
Dylan Carnes led the Greyhounds, finishing 72nd in 19:38 on the 5K course at Old Settlers Park. Carnes and his teammates settled in toward the back half of the pack early in the race.
“With it being the state level, we were antsy, and we tried to keep in our heads to keep the pace slow at the beginning,” Carnes said. “At the mile, we tried to open it up and see what we can do.”
Khristian Talamantes was 81st in 19:57. Cord Hankins ran 20:08 for 85th. Jarrett Tinsman took 90th in 20:41. Jessie Bowen finished 93rd as the fifth Greyhound in 20:48.
Luis Castillo was 97th in 20:55, and Daniel McCasland 101st in 21:19.
