Decatur’s Karen Fernandez closed her high school powerlifting career with a ninth-place finish at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association’s state championships Friday.
Fernandez lifted a total of 770 in her class with a squat of 335, bench press of 135 and deadlift of 300.
“She did a great job,” said Decatur coach Heath Tullous. “Her total went up 25 pounds. I was proud of her. She broke three or four school records and beat a couple girls that were ahead of her. It was the best meet of her career.”
Her 300-pound deadlift was a personal best.
“That’s been her goal for the last two years,” Tullous said. “She got it on the last attempt of her career.”
