After securing her third silver medal Saturday, Decatur’s Hayley Raasch had plenty of reasons to be excited. Among them were the accomplishments of her teammates in the third-year swimming program at the District 6-4A meet.
The Eagles and Lady Eagles brought home a pair of individual district crowns and qualified athletes for regionals in 15 events, including five relays.
“The whole team was successful,” Raasch said. “From where we were last year with eight people to the number we have now is completely ridiculous.”
The Lady Eagles finished fourth at the meet with 70 points. Byron Nelson captured the league crown with 161 points.
On the boys side, the Eagles scored 52 points to take fourth. Byron Nelson topped second-place Denton by 14 points to claim the district title with 148.
“This was our best day,” said Decatur coach Doris Dennard. “Hopefully every year it gets better.”
Dennard will take her largest contingent to the Class 4A Region II meet Feb. 4-5 in Keller.
“We’ve got a few weeks to fine tune,” she said.
Several Decatur swimmers narrowly missed qualifying for regionals, but still improved their times.
“We really did well,” Dennard said. “Some people that didn’t medal still dropped times. They all swam hard.”
