Chavez, McCann earn state bids

The Northwest Lady Texans will be represented by a pair of underclassmen in the Class 5A race at the University Interscholastic League’s cross country championships Saturday.

Freshman Katherine Chavez and sophomore Kellee McCann earned the state bids with top-10 finishes Saturday in the Class 5A Region I race at Lubbock’s Mae Simmons Park.

Chavez finished fifth, running 11:23 on the 3,200-meter course. McCann of Newark took ninth in 11:31.

Southlake Carroll’s Shelby Chapin won the regional race in 11:12. Flower Mound Marcus’ Katie Canavin took second in 11:17.

Carroll captured the team title with 27 points. Flower Mound was second with 90. Marcus finished third with 98.

Northwest took fifth with 179.

Taylor Bohr gave the Lady Texans a third top-20 finisher, taking 17th in 11:50. Cooper Mitchell finished 83rd in the 12:45. Alyssa Childress was the fifth Lady Texan, running 12:50 for 92nd.

She was one spot and a step ahead of Samantha Shows. Baylee Nelson ran 13:14 for 127th.
