Boyd aims for top three finish

The Boyd Lady Yellowjackets made history last week, winning the program’s first cross country district title.

The Lady Yellowjackets will try to follow it up by earning a bid into the state meet Saturday in the Class 2A race at the Region II meet in Arlington. The Lady Yellowjackets will hit the Vandergriff Park course at 11:15 a.m.

Boyd coach Oscar Hernandez said his girls should be in the running for one of the three state bids.

“I would consider us a top-five team with a realistic shot at being second or third if my girls run the way they are capable of,” Hernandez said. “We’ve had good practices Monday and Tuesday. We should be ready.”

The Lady Yellowjackets have completed a thorough study of the course, running one meet at Vandergriff and also practicing there last weekend.

“We ran the course for an hour Saturday,” Hernandez said. “We should know every crook and cranny.”

Skylar Truly, who was third at the District 10-2A meet, returns to the course where she finished ninth last year to earn a state bid with a 12:31.

Hernandez expects Truly, freshman Jessica Burch and Courtney Sanders to break 13 minutes.

“Courtney is done with volleyball now, and I expect her to post a good time,” he said. “She’s capable of it like last year in track when she won the 3,200.”
