A woman was found dead Tuesday off County Road 4421 near New Fairview, just a few miles east of U.S. 81/287.
Sheriff David Walker said a vehicle was discovered about 15 or 20 yards off the road. The body of Monica Haskins Jorns, 50, of Southlake was found about 50 yards from the vehicle near a creek.
A preliminary autopsy report conducted by the Dallas Medical Examiner’s Office found that she died of what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
“Oil field workers found a car parked out near a creek,” Walker said. “They walked around the car and saw her lying right by the creek.”
A rifle was also found at the scene. Wise County Sheriff’s Office investigators are working the case as a questionable death.
“We work the case just like we would anything else,” Walker said. “We look at evidence from the scene and from the autopsy reports. We’ve also been interviewing friends and family members of the victim.”
They are awaiting a toxicology report before issuing an official conclusion.
