An office manager at a Decatur doctor’s office was arrested Wednesday for allegedly stealing more than $100,000 from her employer over the course of several years.
Maria Varela-Martinez of Decatur turned herself into the Decatur Police Department Wednesday morning. She was arrested and charged with credit card or debit card abuse, a state jail felony, and theft of property between $100,000 to $200,000, a second degree felony.
She was transported to Wise County Jail where she was placed under a $36,000 bond. She posted bail the same day and was released.
Varela-Martinez had been employed as the office manager for Dr. Meria G. Aulds.
“She was the office manager there for two to three years,” said Decatur Police Sgt. Gerald Wright. “She’d been given a credit card to use for business purchases, like buying supplies for the office.
“Apparently, it looked like she started using it as a personal credit card.”
While checking into the financial records, Aulds discovered a lot of out of the ordinary purchases on the business card.
They found charges ranging from groceries to dance lessons. Varela-Martinez also allegedly purchased a number of money orders. Wright said they were working with the U.S. Postal Service to find out where those might have gone.
“After we started looking into this, I was astonished at the amount of money it added up to,” Wright said.
