Funeral for Joe Paul Nichols Sr., 69, of Jacksboro was to be 10 a.m. Saturday, July 30, at First Baptist Church in Jacksboro. Burial was to follow at Cundiff Cemetery in Jack County.

Nichols died Wednesday, July 27, 2011, in Jacksboro.

Born Sept. 13, 1941, in Cundiff to O.W. “Jack” and Myrtle Iva (Riggs) Nichols, he married Carolyn Martin June 28, 1963, in Jacksboro. He formed his own band in 1970, The Five Pennies, that was known for playing traditional country music.

He was a member of Cundiff Baptist Church for 56 years, where he served as music director, the International Country Gospel Music Association and the Texas International Music Association.

He and his wife ran Nichols and Beene Tours for 18 years, taking tourists on bus trips. He also served as Jack County commissioner of Precinct 1 from 1998 to 2008.

He is survived by his wife; daughter Jennifer Gasca and husband, Chris; son Joe Paul Nichols Jr. and wife, Shauna; sister JoAnn Hull and husband, Don; grandchildren Allison Cox, Christin Gasca, Payton Gasca, Tanner Gasca, Erin Nichols, Taylor Nichols and Jordan Nichols.
