The Wise County Health Fair is just days away, and this year promises to be the best yet! The Health Fair is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at the Decatur Civic Center. Sponsored by United Way, the Health Fair is promoting a healthier Wise County through community awareness and education.

New this year is the Family Fun Run that will begin with registration at 9:45 a.m., followed by the approximate 1-mile run/walk at 10:30 a.m. around the perimeter of the Civic Center and adjacent properties. The first 100 to register on the day of the event receive a free T-shirt sponsored by the Minimally Invasive Spine Institute, Dr. Mark Valente.

Upon completion of the course, participants will enter their name in a drawing for outstanding prizes such as youth bicycles; various sports equipment; gym memberships; camping supplies; beach and summer games; and exercise equipment. Sponsors of these prizes are Wise Electric Cooperative; Healthline Medical; Fit-N-Wise; Firehouse Gym; Edge Fitness; and Dena Silvers.

One of the key features of the Health Fair will be school immunizations offered for $14 to $22. There are many free opportunities as well. The Wise Regional Health System radiology department will conduct carotid artery scans. There will also be free dental, vision and hearing screenings, as well as free blood pressure checks. North Texas Community Hospital will conduct the following screenings for $5: total cholesterol (fasting recommended), PSA for men, thyroid, diabetes and anemia.

Some of the things featured include the TxDOT/Highway Patrol Roll Cage, Decatur Fire Department truck tour, Texas Lifestar helicopter, face painting and fingerprint I.D. kits. The Better Living for Texans program will exhibit information about MyPyramid. Participants will be able to attend gardening workshops offered by Wise County 4-H and a class on venomous snake identification by Austin Reptile Service.

Chairman of the event is Toni Schmalzried. She may be contacted at toni.schmalzried@healthlinedme.com or (940) 210-1151.
