WISE NOTES FOR CONSUMERS

Pie making on DIY Tuesday menu

By Tanya Davis | Published Thursday, July 14, 2011

I have a confession to make. Even though my degree says home economics education, until a couple of years ago I had always failed miserably when attempting to prepare my own pie crusts.

It has always been straight to the refrigerator section to purchase the premade crusts. They aren’t bad, and I have received quite good reviews on several of my pies. But there was always this burning desire to say that I had mastered a pie crust. Finally, though not yet a master, I am comfortable enough to offer my expertise.

Thus, one of the topics for the third Do it Yourself (DIY) Tuesday, youth day camp is the “Art of Pie Making.” DIY Tuesday will be held at the Wise County Extension Office 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 19. We will be sharing recipes and the secrets of preparing a delicious fruit pie with a tender, flaky crust, as well as preparing and processing a terrific jar of jelly.

The cost of the DIY Tuesday camp is $15 to cover the cost of materials and is open to youth ages 8-12. To register for the half-day camp, call the Extension office at (940) 627-334. Space is limited.

Remember, making a pie is easier than you think and is as American as apple pie.
