A crowd gathers. Nervous feet shuffle in the artificial light. Wide eyes peer through glass doors.

Despite individual wants they hold the same curiosity as results are compiled inside the county offices. Digital votes trickle in from electronic ballot boxes around the county. Rain spills soft splashes and patters like the calculations being compiled inside dry, temperature-controlled confines.

After two weeks of votes flowing in from early voting locations, the May municipal and school board elections will finish Saturday night.

Our roaming photographer captured the scene outside the Wise County Record’s office in Decatur. He tried to find a new angle on election night coverage.

The pink umbrellas created a point of interest to direct the eye. The image was shot in low light with the camera held steady in hand.

Those new to local government will soon find the election was only their first storm to weather. The election is the simplest element to handle for the ever-scrutinized world of the public volunteers.
