“Man’s heart away from nature becomes hard.”
– Standing Bear
We occupy a temporal spot in the seemingly eternal, rigid confines and wide, watery expanses of nature.
A feather lies between rocks dark as deep space and water shifting like time itself.
It seems like our brief passage on earth leaves as little impact as a feather resting on stones. But in only a couple generations, we’ve annihilated numerous species and brought countless more to the brink of extinction. Forests that took tens of thousands of years to form have vanished in the name of short-term gain. Our ephemeral presence has left a gaping hole in nature. And the more we remove ourselves from nature, and the wider we open that gap, the less we care.
Our roaming photographer captured this image while roaming the Oregon coastline. Feather, sky, water and rock represent elements of nature and time.
The glaring, midday light appeared at first to be problematic. But the sun’s angle added extra life to this photo. The overhead glare caused a vivid reflection in the water. The mirrored, blue sky added an element of color.
The feather will break down and wash away. May we remember to live light as the feather.
