NEWARK CONSIDERS ELIMINATING POSITIONS – In an effort to conserve funds, the Newark city council is considering dissolving its police force and eliminating its court clerk position. A committee composed of mayor Matt Newby and two city council members plans to discuss forging a contract with the city of Rhome to have Rhome police officers patrol and respond to calls in Newark city limits. The council is also considering hiring a city manager and an assistant clerk in lieu of hiring a new city secretary in the wake of Tabitha Tucciarone announcing her decision to resign as city secretary. The council discussed these items in open session during a special called meeting Friday. Although originally to be discussed in closed session, Newby said “We don’t have anything to hide,” and chose to make the personnel matters public. Newby cited decreased revenue from property taxes and extensive costs in upgrading the water and sewer infrastructure for the proposed cost saving measures.
