COACH INJURED IN WRECK – Decatur volleyball coach Claire Rose suffered minor injuries and was taken to Wise Regional Health System for treatment after a two-vehicle accident this morning in Decatur. Rose, 29, of Paradise, was stopped at a red light on Farm Road 51 at Preskitt in her car when a pickup driven by Terry Shero, 28, of Alvord, struck her from the rear at 6:15 a.m. “She was stopped at the light and he thinks he may have dozed off and hit her,” said Decatur Officer Robert Cain. Cain said Shero refused treatment. He likely will be cited for failure to control speed. The accident shut down northbound traffic on FM 51 for nearly an hour. Traffic was diverted on to Preskitt.
730 TO CLOSE – Farm Road 730 at U.S. 81/287 will close at 7 p.m. today when crews begin setting the center beam on the new southbound 81/287 overpass. Northbound traffic will be detoured onto southbound 81/287, and southbound traffic will be detoured onto northbound 81/287. Work will continue until the beam is set, and the road is expected to reopen at 7 a.m. Friday.
101 CLOSED TODAY – Texas 101 south of Chico will be closed today as Union Pacific replaces a section of track. Traffic will be diverted to Weatherford Street. The project is expected to be completed today.
MEMORIAL DAY PROGRAM – The Wise County Veterans Council will provide a Memorial Day program at 1 p.m. Monday, May 31, at the Decatur Civic Center where soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice will be honored. SCV DINNER – The Sons of Confederate Veterans’ annual Bob Holloway dinner is 6 p.m. Saturday at the Decatur Civic Center. Holloway was the camp’s founder and charter member. Retired Texas Ranger and former Wise County Sheriff Phil Ryan will present the program.
HISTORICAL SOCIETY – The Wise County Historical Society will meet at 3 p.m. today at the Heritage Museum in Decatur. Sue Tackel will speak on Wise County cemeteries. The public is invited.
COUNCIL MEET AND GREET – The Bridgeport City Council will hold a meet and greet 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, in the City Hall council chambers at 900 Thompson St. It will give citizens the opportunity to meet newly elected Mayor Keith McComis, council member Matt Van Hoose and City Administrator Brandon Emmons. Other members of the city council will also be present.
LUNCH TO GO – The Decatur Chamber of Commerce’s Lunch to Go this month is sponsored by the Wise County Messenger 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today. A barbecue sandwich, chips, cookie and a drink are $6 and available by pick up at the office, 115 S. Trinity. A portion of the proceeds benefits the chamber’s scholarship program.
